Treating Diabetes with Diabetic Footwear

Men's Therapeutic Diabetic Dress ShoeDiabetics including those with early stages of the disease, often display evidence of neuropathy i.e. lack of sensation in one or both feet. The problem posed by neuropathy can be alleviated by wearing footwear that is specially designed for them. Apart from mass, factory produced footwear, diabetics and those suffering from neuropathy can avail the services of a certified Pedorthist (footwear specialist) to have a custom footwear solution.
How Diabetic Footwear helps combat diabetes

Essentially, diabetic footwear is designed to:

Relieve areas of excessive pressure.
Reduce shock and shear.
Accommodate, stabilize and support deformities.
Limit motion of joints.

People with physical deformities in the feet or problems caused due to diseases such as diabetes, could end up exerting excessive pressure on certain parts of the feet. Diabetic shoes for men help relieve these high pressure areas by ensuring a more even distribution of the person’s weight.

Along with even distribution of weight, diabetic shoes also help reducing the overall amount of shock or vertical pressure on the bottom of the foot as well as a reduction of the shear factor i.e. the horizontal movement of the foot within the shoe which in turn helps avoid ulcers as well as decrease inflammation, relieve pain, and result in a more stable and functional foot.

Custom designed diabetes shoes also help relieve pressure on deformed parts of the foot. Any pressure on deformities generally leads to pain and stress both of which need to be avoided as it could aggravate the person’s diabetic condition.

Before you buy Diabetic footwear:

Salk Diabetic Socks for Better Foot CareIf you suffer from any kind of foot deformity, foot ulcers, joint pains, etc. you need to pay close attention to the footwear you select.
Proper shoe fit is achieved by ensuring accuracy of the shoe shape and size; they must match the shape and size of your foot. Also, the shoes need to have adequate room in the toe area, across the ball of the foot, over the instep, and the heel must fit snugly.

Shoe size must also take into account the 3/8 to 1/2-inch gap between the end of the shoe and the longest toe. Also, shoes with laces are generally better as the user can adjust the fit in the event of any swelling in the foot.

In-depth shoes are generally popular amongst Diabetics because of the additional 1/4- to 1/2-inch of depth throughout the shoe. The increased depth allows extra volume to accommodate any needed inserts as well as for deformities commonly associated with a diabetic foot. In-depth diabetics shoes also generally lighter in weight, have better shock absorbing soles, and come in a wide range of shapes and sizes.

If you are a diabetic, taking good care of your feet is always a priority. Pay special attention to your footwear – proper footwear can help prevent serious foot problems. Be sure to talk to your physician about the type of shoes, modifications and shoe inserts that are right for you.

These days quality diabetic footwear is also available online. Be sure to browse and select the diabetic footwear that is right for you.

Diabetes incontinence products and lifestyle

Diabetes incontinence productA diabetic tends to suffer from frequent urination and depending on the age of the diabetic, may not always be able to exert control over it resulting in involuntary wetting of clothes. Diabetes incontinence therefore is an invaluable aid to diabetics. Wearing an incontinence pad or incontinence briefs, a diabetic could go about his or her day to day activities with confidence and without fear that their disease will cause an embarrassment.

Types of diabetes incontinence products

Apart from diabetic incontinence that can be worn like an undergarment, drug stores and most shopping malls also stock incontinence products that help protect mattresses and bed sheets.

Supports your current lifestyle

The easy availability of child and adult diabetic incontinence means that people suffering from loss of bladder control due to diabetes or any other disease or accident, need not retire or alter their lifestyle.

The modern diabetes incontinence product

Typical diabetes incontinence is made from more than one material. The inner part is usually padded with anti-reactive, skin-friendly, soft anti-bacterial and highly absorbent material. Again, the type of material used is also dependent on type of incontinence use – urinary or fecal.

A popular misconception is that fecal incontinence pads absorb fecal matter; in reality, it only absorbs the fluid and holds the fecal matter within a separate bag like structure. The special material that is used within the incontinence pad ensures zero spill or stains especially at the edge of the incontinence product. Most commercially available diabetes incontinence products are water and moisture resistant.

Buying diabetes incontinence products

When you buy diabetes incontinence products, look out for the ‘ISO capacity’ label. The ‘ISO capacity’ label indicates the maximum quantity of liquid it can hold. Select a product that caters to your specific needs. Also, diabetes incontinence products such as incontinence panties and briefs are also available in non-rustle material, i.e. they do not rustle when the user walks, are thin so its outline is not visible through the clothes. People suffering from lack of control over body fluids need not any longer alter their lifestyle or working hours – they do not have to opt to work at nights. More importantly, modern day diabetes incontinence products effectively hold fluid and fecal matter without causing stains or releasing odor.

In tune with your fashion statement

Diabetes incontinence productsLove wearing figure-hugging jeans or the latest fashion apparels and accessories? The technology adopted by the manufacturers of diabetes incontinence products closely mimics the technology adopted by fashion garment manufacturers. Modern day diabetes incontinence pads are molded according to the contours and shape of human body. This not only helps prevent leakage, it makes the product more comfy and wearable along with your fashion garments. Truly, modern diabetes incontinence products have come a long way and the embarrassment associated with it is a thing of the past.

If you are suffering from diabetes and resultant loss of control over body fluids, life without the diabetes incontinence products would have been humiliating and almost impossible.

Where to buy

Diabetes incontinence products for men and women are available at most drug stores and shopping malls. However, the best place to buy them is online; you can shop in the privacy of your home, compare products and select the one that best suits your needs. Incontinence products are always carefully and discreetly packed.

How Diabetes Symptoms can be reversed

Diabetes symptomsTrouble begins when over indulgence in food (requiring an over-production of insulin) either leads to failure of the pancreas or cell damage (caused by over-production of insulin) in-turn leading to insulin becoming ineffective. Unfortunately, once the process of converting food into energy breaks down, there is no way to repair it. However, diabetes symptoms can be reversed by keeping our blood sugar levels under control and adopting a healthier lifestyle.

How diabetes symptoms can be reversed

1. First off, you need to consult a diabetic specialist so that you can be properly diagnosed as to the type of diabetes (Type I or Type II) and also the progress of the disease. Where required, the physician or specialist will also prescribe medicines that may or may not include insulin.

2. If you are an adult, given that diabetes is categorized as a ‘lifestyle disease’ (meaning triggered by unhealthy lifestyle of the person), you would probably have to make drastic changes to your lifestyle. These changes would have to include incorporating adequate exercises, eating regular healthy meals, getting adequate sleep and if you were previously overeating, then, incorporating portion control plates, cups and glasses into your dinnerware.

3. You would also have to get yourself acquainted with the U.S.D.A approved concept of ‘MyPlate’ diet. Briefly, Myplate refers to a plate theoretically divided into four parts in the ratios of 3:3:2:2. The larger parts are one each for vegetables and wholegrain (including pulses). The two smaller parts are one each for proteins and fruit. To this, include a small 6 oz glass of low-fat milk or non-fat, non-sweetened yoghurt.

4. You also need to understand the energy formulae: Food to consume = Total energy requirement. An average adult requires approximately 2,100 calories of food every day (because we need roughly 2,100 calories of energy each day). If you need to reduce your weight, you should incorporate physical activity equivalent to not less than 200 calories per day. Since you are drawing 200 calories worth of additional energy than that provided by food, your body makes up the deficit by breaking down 200 calories worth of stored fat. Over time, you will reduce your body fat.

5. You also need to understand that some foods are digested immediately and therefore release glucose immediately into the blood stream. Other foods (e.g. proteins) take some time to digest. If you have been prescribed medication, you need to time the medication so it coincides with the glucose release in the blood stream. This is vital as mismatch will lead to your medication becoming ineffective and your diabetes progressing further despite the medication.

6. Conduct regular blood sugar tests at home by using diabetes test strips. The only way you know the efficacy of your medication as well as your efforts is by conducting regular blood sugar tests at home. If your medication is matched with the release of glucose in the blood, then even at peak times your blood sugar should have a normal reading. This is the sign that you have got it right.

If you incorporate all six actionable points mentioned above, then your diabetes symptoms can be reversed.

Typefreediabetes.com – Checking Your Blood Glucose

Diabetic or not, most adults in the US (and these days teens too) have at some point in time or the other done a blood glucose test. We all know that blood glucose test is meant to test for ‘sugar’ in the blood. But is blood really sweet? In my blog today, allow me to give you a ball park overview of what exactly is a blood glucose test.

insulin syringesI’m Deborah Susan, a dietician and personal trainer specializing in nutrition and physical fitness for diabetics.
A blood glucose test can be done at home with a good quality blood glucose tester (sold over the counter by most drug stores) or at a medical testing facility or clinic.

If you are visiting the clinic for a blood glucose test then I recommended that you fast – eat or drink nothing other than water for at least 8 hours prior to the test (hence it is called the fasting blood glucose test). Obviously therefore, the best time to do a blood glucose test by using blood glucose test strips or at a clinic would be early morning.

Is the blood sweet?

We need energy for everything – even when we are asleep and busy dreaming we need energy. Energy is primarily obtained from Glucose. Glucose in turn is manufactured by our body from the food that we eat. Each organ in our body needs glucose and so the body uses the blood stream as the best way to transport glucose around.

Too much electrical current or too little of it can ruin your precious digital gadget. As with everything in life, in blood too, there is an optimal level of glucose. Anything above or below the optimal level causes severe problems. Think of the blood glucose test as a meter that indicates the current level of glucose in your blood.

Once you arrive at the medical clinic, a small blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm by using diabetes test strips. The standard practice is to put 50% in one tiny sterile bottle and the remaining in another tiny sterile bottle. This is so two tests can be done to verify the results. In reality, most clinics that do a blood glucose test only perform a single test. A second test is done only if the supervisor feels the results of the first test are unrealistic.

diabetes glucose tabletsA second blood glucose test is done an hour after your lunch. The procedure is identical to one done in the morning.

The results

70 ~ 99 mg/dL (3.9 to 5.5 mmol/L) would be the normal reading for fasting blood glucose test

100 ~ 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L) would indicate impaired fasting blood glucose (an indication of pre-diabetes stage).

126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) and more would usually call for at least one more round of testing before pronouncing the person as a diabetic.

Blood Glucose Test is also known as : Fasting blood sugar (FBS), Blood sugar; Fasting blood glucose (FBG), Blood glucose, Fasting plasma glucose (FPG), Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT), and Urine glucose.

Body fat monitors and weight scale

The body fat weight scale differs dramatically from the regular bathroom weight scale – here’s how: Imagine yourself on a weight loss diet; couple of months down the line your body structure has undergone a dramatic change so you weigh yourself on a regular bathroom weighting scale but find no change in your body weight.

Your body weight mystery decoded

If your body had a ‘fine print’, the mystery would have been solved! The body fat weight scale (might) probably have indicated that you lost 8Lbs in fat, 2Lbs in water and gained 10 Lbs in muscle. Now considering your new look, doesn’t this make more sense?

You work hard every day on your diet and your workouts and we know it isn’t easy. Rather than work in the blind with less than effective feedback from your regular weighing scale, a body fat percentage scale by giving you a more detailed and accurate pictures, provides a more effective feedback so you know you are on the right (or wrong) diet and exercise plan.

Prior to the body fat weight scale, the only way to obtain a real picture was by visiting lab or looking at yourself in a mirror and guessing your progress. The first is not very practical and the second not very accurate. For a hundred bucks or so you can buy yourself a nice body fat monitor scales and use it whenever and wherever you like and more importantly, you can even download the data into a convenient USB storage device.

The body fat weight scale explained

The body fat weight scale uses a technique called BIA short for “Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis” – a technique that is very similar to measuring blood sugar. The BIA technique works by passing a tiny harmless electrical current through your body. As it passes through your body, there are certain areas where it meets with very little resistance and other areas where it meets with lots of resistance. The former is muscle and the latter is fat.

Based on the feedback received, a body density picture emerges. This is then used to calculate the body fat percentage.

Once you are on a diet and exercise plan, use the body fat monitor roughly once a week and you will be amazed to see how your body responds (or doesn’t) depending on the effectiveness of the diet and exercise. Essentially, the body fat weight scale is more effective than your bathroom weight scale.

Effectiveness of the body fat weight scale

A poorly conceived weight loss program can actually do you harm because you could end up losing muscle rather than fat. It is therefore important you use the body fat percentage calculator before you begin any weight loss program. This enables you to compare the ‘before’ and ‘after’ picture. Should you lose muscle instead of fat, you know that something is wrong and will want to take corrective measures.

All this is possible only through information and the body fat weight scale does just that – it provides you with vital feedback on the quality of the weight loss program by measuring its effect on your body.

If you are on a weight loss or weight maintenance plan, invest in best body fat scales today – it will be one of the wisest decisions you’ve made.

Supplements for Diabetes

Considering that diabetics are often cautioned against eating certain foods, dietary supplements for diabetes is vital because it ensures that any dietary deficiencies are rectified. Here, we have put together an informative article on dietary supplements for diabetes. Read on.

Weight Control SupplementsThe fact that diabetes is a disease that is only managed with medication has lead to people with diabetes to turn to alternative therapies. The use of supplements for diabetes is one such alternative therapy that many diabetics follow. Dietary supplements consist of vitamins and minerals or herbs that provide nutritional benefits to those with health problems such as diabetes. However, the patients might still have to continue with their regular diabetes medication; the glucose supplements for diabetes only help in reducing blood glucose levels or improve the insulin action.

People believe that herbal dietary supplements being natural products will not have adverse effects. Besides, our ancestors used these natural products to cure all kinds of ailments, which again strengthen the belief that they must be good for health. Although there may not be enough research to prove that blood sugar supplements for diabetes are helpful to diabetics, ongoing studies show a great deal of promise. Some dietary supplements for diabetes may be useful in controlling the glucose levels, enhancing insulin action, lowering cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)

Alpha Lipoic Acid is an antioxidant found in spinach, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, potatoes, peas and liver. Studies have shown that ALA improved symptoms of peripheral neuropathy in diabetic patients and it also helped lower their blood glucose levels. ALA also showed improved insulin sensitivity.

Magnesium

People with diabetes may suffer from magnesium deficiency. Some studies have shown the intake of magnesium to lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin action. However, diabetics might want to check for magnesium deficiency before using these diabetes nutritional supplements.

Chromium

Chromium is a trace mineral that is essential for glucose metabolism. It improves insulin action and is used as a supplement for diabetes. Chromium is believed to assist in metabolizing proteins, fats and carbohydrates making it a popular dietary supplement among those wanting to lose weight. Grape juice, brewers yeast, beef, broccoli, dried basil, dried garlic and red wine are good sources of this mineral.

Bitter Melon

Bitter melon or bitter gourd is a green fruit found in the tropical regions and used for cooking as well as medicine in India, Africa, Asia and South America. This fruit is believed to help the cells use blood glucose more effectively and increase glycogen synthesis in the muscles and liver. Bitter melon is consumed as a vegetable, juice or tea; it can also be taken in a capsule form. Some people may experience gastrointestinal distress as a side effect to the fruit.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek seeds are an essential part of Indian cooking and have been used for various ailments since ancient times. Fenugreek is used in ayurvedic medication for digestive and menopausal problems. It is one of the well known supplements for diabetes that aids in lowering blood sugar and stimulating the release of insulin in diabetic patients. Additionally, fenugreek seeds are thought to lower triglycerides and cholesterol.

Many supplements for diabetes are being used to manage the disease; however, it is recommended that you speak to your doctor or health care professional before using them.
